Abstract
The article focuses on pianist Yevgeny Sudbin’s interpretative guidance for Tchaikovsky’s “June: Barcarolle” from the piano cycle *The Seasons*, Op. 37a. Sudbin explains that although the cycle was composed under deadline pressure and sometimes considered less sophisticated, the “Barcarolle” contains significant emotional depth beneath its apparent simplicity. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining a steady rhythmic flow, careful voicing within chords, and a singing legato tone, advising minimal use of rubato to preserve the piece’s natural emotional expression. Sudbin also highlights the harmonic structure as a key tool for understanding phrasing and tension, and discusses technical aspects such as wrist relaxation and pedaling to support clarity and spontaneity in performance.
