Abstract
The article focuses on the complex involvement of British writers and volunteers in the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), highlighting the ideological divisions between support for the Republican and Nationalist sides. While the Republicans, backed by the Soviet Union and leftist factions, attracted most British intellectuals and volunteers who opposed fascism, a minority, including notable figures like Evelyn Waugh and Peter Kemp, supported the Nationalists due to their anti-communist stance. George Orwell’s experience fighting with the anti-Stalinist POUM militia exposed internal conflicts within the Republican side and inspired his critical memoir *Homage to Catalonia*, which challenged simplistic narratives of the war. The article illustrates how the war was not only a battle against fascism but also a struggle involving competing authoritarian ideologies, reflecting broader tensions in 1930s Europe.
