Abstract
The United Nations Security Council has unanimously lifted the arms embargo on Somalia, which had been in place for over 30 years. The embargo was initially imposed in 1992 after clan warlords overthrew the central government. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre welcomed the decision, stating that it has the potential to reshape the nation's security landscape. However, the breakaway Republic of Somaliland opposes the lifting of the embargo, citing concerns about Somalia's ability to effectively trace weapons and prevent their diversion to terrorist groups.
