Abstract

A study conducted by Brigham Young University examined the representation of bodies in Disney animated films from 1937 to 2019. The findings revealed that the majority of Disney characters were portrayed with average or above-average body weights. However, the study also found that body thinness was associated with attractiveness, larger physiques were associated with leadership, and major characters tended to be shorter and more stereotypically portrayed in terms of body size and shape. The researchers recommend increased discussion between parents and children about body depictions in Disney films to promote healthy body images. Further research is needed as Disney continues to be a significant source of children's media. [Extracted from the article]
