Abstract

This article focuses on a collaborative autoethnographic poem created as an introductory assignment for a graduate course titled *Freire and American Education*. The poem responds to Walt Whitman’s "I Hear America Singing" by expanding its inclusivity to represent marginalized and diverse voices often excluded from traditional definitions of "American" within the U.S. context. The course critically examines Paulo Freire’s educational theories, particularly their relevance and challenges in U.S. education, while questioning who is recognized as "American" and whose voices remain unheard or erased. The resulting poem integrates contemporary perspectives to testify to the multiplicity of American identities, aiming to foster equity, inclusivity, and self-reflection among educators and students.
