Abstract

This article focuses on Ralph Lauren's design of Team USA's Winter Olympic uniforms for the Milan Games, highlighting the blend of iconic American style, athlete input, and new insulation technology. The uniforms feature a dominant white color scheme symbolizing purity and unity, with mid-length wool toggle coats and tailored pants for the Opening Ceremonies, and a more casual white-and-red ensemble for the Closing Ceremonies. Athlete feedback influenced the inclusion of favored items like turtlenecks, and the collection incorporates nostalgic elements such as a sheepskin bomber jacket inspired by World War I U.S. Army flight jackets. Additionally, Nike provides medalists with ThermaFIT Air Milano jackets featuring adjustable air insulation technology to regulate warmth without layering.
