Abstract
The article focuses on Stanley Corngold's 2022 book examining Thomas Mann's intellectual and literary output during his American exile at Princeton University from 1938 to 1941. Corngold analyzes Mann's political essays, highlighting his commitment to a form of democratic socialism that balances individual freedom with the common good, and explores Mann's reflections on German history and culture amid Nazi rule. The study also addresses Mann's literary work completed in Princeton, including the novel *Lotte in Weimar*, which critiques Nazi cultural appropriation through a reimagining of Goethe. Corngold's work situates Mann's Princeton period as a significant and productive phase, offering insights into his political philosophy and artistic responses to exile and totalitarianism.
