Abstract

This article discusses the Chinese Rites Controversy, a religious dispute that occurred during Louis XIV's reign in France. The controversy centered around whether the Jesuit missionaries' adaptation of Catholicism to Chinese culture and religion was tolerating idolatry. The author provides a detailed account of the controversy, focusing on the French side and discussing events such as the establishment of the Missions étrangères de Paris and the censure of Jesuit ideas concerning China. The article also explores the overlap between the Chinese Rites Controversy and other ecclesiastical disputes, such as struggles over jurisdiction and the involvement of Jansenists. The author argues that the controversy transformed into a clash between East and West, but also acknowledges the validity of the critiques against the Jesuits. While the article provides a comprehensive account of the controversy, it is noted that there are some gaps in the coverage, particularly regarding the role of lesser-known figures and the development of the controversy in Rome. Overall, the article offers valuable insights into the Chinese Rites Controversy and its significance in French history. [Extracted from the article]
