Abstract
This article discusses the importance of Frederick Douglass's essay "Reconstruction" and its call for a radical reimagining of the American idea. The essay, published in The Atlantic in 1866, argued for the reinvention of the United States through war and emancipation. The article also highlights the enduring consequences of Reconstruction's failure and the need to revisit this period in the face of ongoing racial progress. The issue includes contributions from scholars and features an original play by Anna Deavere Smith. [Extracted from the article]
