Abstract

This article reviews Bruno de Sa's album *Roma Travestita*, which explores the repertoire of castrato singers from the Baroque and Classical periods, a time when women were banned from the stage and composers wrote virtuosic arias for male sopranos and countertenors. De Sa, a Brazilian soprano specializing in this repertoire, delivers technically demanding and ornamented performances, including over half world premiere recordings, accompanied by the ensemble Il Pomo d'Oro under Francesco Corti. The album features imaginative but sometimes repetitive music by composers such as Scarlatti, Vinci, Vivaldi, Galuppi, and Piccini, with thorough notes and translations provided. The review highlights De Sa’s vocal flexibility and breath control, noting the historical context while acknowledging the impossibility of fully replicating the original castrato sound.
