Abstract

This article is a memorial for two individuals who made significant contributions to their respective fields. Douglas James Merkler, a soil scientist, passed away at the age of 67. He spent nearly 39 years working for the USDA Soil Conservation Service and was recognized for his mapping of soil-plant assemblages in Nevada. Dr. Cheryl Ann Palm, an agroforestry and soil science expert, passed away at the age of 70. She dedicated her career to incorporating soil biological and ecological processes into agricultural production and environmental management, with a focus on the tropics. She was also known for her mentorship and support of young scientists. Both individuals will be remembered for their contributions and impact on their fields. [Extracted from the article]
