Abstract
The article focuses on the discovery of the Sussex Declaration, a large-scale parchment of the Declaration of Independence found in the West Sussex Record Office, and its potential connections to Thomas Paine and Charles Lennox, the third Duke of Richmond. The Sussex Declaration, believed to have been commissioned by James Wilson, is significant as it is one of the only known large-scale copies aside from the one at the National Archives. The article explores the political activism of the Duke of Richmond, who advocated for popular sovereignty and reform in Britain, and his relationship with Paine, who became a prominent revolutionary figure in America. The findings suggest a deeper historical connection between British and American revolutionary movements, highlighting the influence of radical ideas across the Atlantic. [Extracted from the article]
