Abstract
This article from the Atlantic Monthly discusses the history and significance of Freedmen's Town, a neighborhood in Houston that was settled by formerly enslaved people in 1866. The author focuses on the work of Elbert D. Howze, a Black Vietnam War veteran and photographer, who documented the disappearing landscape of the Fourth Ward, including its historic buildings and brick streets. Howze's photographs, which captured the personalities and lives of the neighborhood's residents, are now held at the Gregory School, an African American history center. The article highlights the ongoing efforts of activists to preserve the neighborhood's historic features. [Extracted from the article]
