Abstract

This article focuses on Norman Rockwell’s iconic baseball painting, *The Three Umpires*, which depicts a rain delay decision during a game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field in 1948. The painting features three umpires—John “Beans” Reardon, Larry Goetz, and Lou Jorda—along with the Pirates manager Billy Meyer and Dodgers coach Clyde Sukeforth, and is noted for its detailed composition based on reference photographs taken by Rockwell. The article explores the painting’s creation, including Rockwell’s artistic choices, the identities of the figures portrayed, and anomalies such as the depiction of only three umpires instead of four, reflecting the era’s practices. It also discusses the discovery of a previously unknown color study of the painting, the controversies surrounding the expressions of the managers, and the painting’s enduring cultural significance as part of Americana and baseball history.
