Abstract
When Charles de Gaulle visited the Military Academy of Paris on 3 November 1959, he proposed a challenge to the dualistic Cold War situation that had erupted between the Soviet Union and the United States of America.1 One of the main principles of De Gaulle’s geopolitical vision was that France had to be restored to the rank of a major power.2 On that November day, De Gaulle announced one of his plans to make sure that France would reclaim this great power status, namely the development of a nuclear deterrent. He called it the Force de Frappe. 3 Just a few months later, on 13 February 1960, the first French atomic bomb called Gerboise Bleue was tested in the Sahara Department in French Algeria.
