Abstract

The article focuses on the significance of the Portuguese nau during the 14th to 16th centuries, particularly in relation to the spice trade initiated by Vasco da Gama's voyage to India in 1498. The nau, a large merchant ship designed for long voyages, featured a wide and deep hull for substantial cargo capacity, typically carrying spices like pepper and cloves. Despite its advantages, the nau was difficult to maneuver and had cramped living conditions for the crew, which could number up to 600. The vessel played a crucial role in the Age of Exploration and the expansion of global trade routes until it was eventually replaced by the more heavily armed galleon. [Extracted from the article]
