Abstract

Ramsdell's essay does not appear in the long bibliography in Kevin Waite's I West of Slavery i , although Waite shows, contra Ramsdell, that proslavery southerners had real designs on spreading slavery into the Far West, no matter how inhospitable the terrain appeared to be. In 1929, University of Texas historian Charles Ramsdell delivered a presidential address to the Mississippi Valley Historical Association titled "The Natural Limits of Slavery Expansion." Moreover, southern proslavery expansionists schemed to transplant their distinctive form of chattel slavery into the newly acquired territories, making it a west I for i slavery.
