Abstract

The article focuses on the Portuguese carrack Santa Catarina do Monte Sinai, Vasco da Gama's last and largest flagship, built in Cochin, India, between 1512 and 1520. It details the ship's construction, design features—including its distinctive elongated stern castle—and armament, as well as its historical role in transporting the corrupt governor Duarte de Menezes back to Portugal in 1521. The author describes the creation of a detailed 1:100 scale wooden model of the ship, highlighting its rigging, sails, deck furnishings, and crew figures, which is used in educational presentations for senior learners in Galveston, Texas. The article also situates the Santa Catarina within the broader context of Portuguese "U-ship" designs used during the Age of Discovery.
