Abstract

This article examines the Romanian response to the French May 1968 social upheavals within the context of Nicolae Ceaușescu's nationalist communist regime and Romania's cultural-political conservatism. It argues that Romania's experience of 1968 must be understood alongside the August 1968 Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia and two decades of Soviet cultural control, which framed nationalism as emancipation and suppressed any echo of Western-style youthful revolt. Romanian media portrayed May 1968 primarily through a conservative lens, emphasizing worker solidarity and dismissing student and hippy movements as lacking ideals or political legitimacy, while promoting Ceaușescu's regime as a modernizing national force. The article highlights how Romania's unique political and cultural circumstances led to a muted and state-controlled engagement with May 68, contrasting with broader European interpretations of the events as anti-authoritarian social revolts.
