Abstract
This article describes the formation of the Society at the New Room in Bristol and the membership books written by John Wesley between 1770 and 1786. It gives an account of the method of transcribing the surviving lists and linking them across the years. It analyses the data contained in them in terms of numbers, sex ratios, marital status, occupations, mobility, disability, morbidity and mortality. It looks separately at teenagers and the elderly. It acknowledges that there are limitations on household analysis but claims that the data in the membership books increase our understanding of a local nonconformist population.
