Abstract

The article focuses on the British military mission known as "Dunsterforce," which was launched at the end of World War I to prevent Ottoman forces from accessing oil supplies in Baku, now part of Azerbaijan. Commanded by Major-General Lionel Dunsterville, the mission consisted of a small convoy of vehicles and aimed to reach Baku via Persia, carrying funds to support local resistance against the Turks. Despite facing significant challenges, including delays and a lack of local support, Dunsterforce managed to delay the Turkish advance for several weeks, ultimately leading to a chaotic evacuation from Baku. The article highlights the colorful characters involved in the mission and reflects on its historical significance, noting that while the mission ended in defeat, it temporarily hindered enemy access to crucial oil resources.
