Abstract
This is a slightly adapted and published Chapter 6 of Gordon R. Preece's published PhD (Fuller, distinction), The Viability of the Vocation Tradition: A Trinitarian and Reformed Theology in Trinitarian, Credal and Reformed Perspective (Lewiston: Edwin Mellen Press, 1998). It displays the trinitarian theology of Gustav Wingren (Lutheran Creation-based), Karl Barth (Reformed, Christocentric) and Gustav Moltmann and his outstanding Croation student student Miroslav Volf (my doctoral supervisor). Further, it demonstrates their particular trinitarian emphases in terms of the three articles of the Apostles' and Nicene Creeds. This paper shows Moltmann's eschatological (last things) and pneumatological (Spirit-filled priority and giftbased) influence on Volf. Moltmann's (lesser) and Volf's (stronger) critique stresses Martin Luther's overemphasis on the first person of the Trinity in creation and thus a relatively conservative theology of calling or vocation, influencing a more static Protestant Work Ethic.
