Abstract
This article focuses on a recording by the Confringo Piano Quartet featuring Brahms's Piano Quartet No. 3 and Hans Gal's Piano Quartet in A. Brahms's quartet, begun in 1855 and completed in 1875, reflects personal circumstances involving the Schumanns and is noted for its dark and stern character. Hans Gal, a composer influenced by Brahms but with a modern harmonic language, wrote his quartet in 1926 for Paul Wittgenstein, a pianist who lost his right arm in World War I, resulting in a challenging left-hand piano part. The Confringo Piano Quartet, an international ensemble awarded the Hans Gal Prize in 2024, delivers a passionate and expressive performance, particularly highlighting the creativity of Gal’s work.
