Abstract

The article focuses on the experiences of Scandinavian sailors, particularly those aboard the Swedish-owned sailing yacht Celeste of Solent, as they transit the Panama Canal during the 2026 World ARC round-the-world sailing rally. It outlines the historical development of the Panama Canal—from French and American construction efforts to Panamanian control since 1999—and highlights the canal's engineering features, such as its lock system and Gatún Lake. The narrative also explores the personal motivations of crew members from Sweden, Norway, Romania, and Great Britain, emphasizing the canal's role as a pivotal maritime passage connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and its significance in global trade and exploration.
