Abstract

The article focuses on the 200th anniversary celebration in Leesburg, Virginia, of the Marquis de Lafayette’s visit on August 9, 1825, highlighting his significant tour of the United States in 1824–1825. Invited by President James Monroe to rekindle revolutionary ideals and support republican movements in Europe, Lafayette, the last living general of the American Revolution, was warmly received across the country by veterans, political leaders, and citizens. His visit reinforced the Monroe Doctrine’s principles against European colonialism in the Western Hemisphere and drew attention to issues such as slavery. The tour included stops at key historical sites and meetings with prominent figures like Presidents Monroe and John Quincy Adams, underscoring Lafayette’s enduring legacy as a hero in both America and France.
