Abstract
The article focuses on the heroic actions of First Lieutenant Baldomero Lopez during the landings at Inchon, South Korea, in September 1950, which were part of Operation Chromite during the Korean War. Lopez, who had recently joined the 3rd Platoon of A Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, displayed extraordinary bravery by sacrificing his life to save his fellow Marines from a grenade explosion. Despite being critically wounded, he chose to absorb the blast with his body, ensuring the safety of his comrades. For his selfless act, Lopez was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, becoming one of the first 42 U.S. Marines to receive this distinction in the Korean War. His legacy is further commemorated through a famous photograph taken by journalist Marguerite Higgins, capturing his final moments on the battlefield. [Extracted from the article]
