Abstract
This article is a review of the book "Message in a Bottle. Merchants' Letters, Merchants' Marks and Conflict Management in 1533–34. A Source Edition." The book contains a collection of merchants' letters that were written in Antwerp and Brussels in 1533 and were intended for delivery in England. However, the letters were seized by Lübeck privateers and ended up in the city archive, where they remained unopened for over 500 years until their discovery in 1994. The letters provide insights into the economic and commercial relationship between Antwerp and England during the early sixteenth century, as well as the personal lives and concerns of the merchants. The book also includes sections on conflict management, merchants' marks, and trade routes. The reviewer praises the editors for their detailed summaries, scholarly apparatus, maps, tables, and high-quality images included in the book. They recommend the book for libraries and researchers interested in medieval and early modern history, as well as cultural and social historians studying letter writing and commercial interaction in urban contexts.
