Abstract

Gordon Campbell's book, "Norse America: The Story of a Founding Myth," explores the belief that the Norse were the first Europeans to reach and settle North America. Campbell examines the evidence and arguments put forth to support this idea, highlighting the role of Protestant Europeans in promoting a pre-Columbian Viking America to supplant the importance of Indigenous peoples. He also exposes the fabrication of physical evidence and misinterpretation of texts and remains that have contributed to the myth of a Norse history in America. Campbell's book emphasizes the importance of critical evaluation of evidence and the recognition of Indigenous contributions to the continent. [Extracted from the article]
