Abstract
This article focuses on Hälle Flygare, a Swedish-Canadian forester and adventurer who mapped and helped preserve the historic Alexander Mackenzie Heritage Trail in British Columbia. Flygare discovered the long-forgotten trail used by Sir Alexander Mackenzie, the first European to cross North America north of Mexico in 1793, and led efforts to document and protect the route, which follows indigenous trade paths through BC’s wilderness. Supported by Canadian government agencies and conservation groups, Flygare spent a decade retracing the trail and published several guidebooks to assist travelers. The trail remains protected today, though affected by forest fires, and Flygare continues to contribute to Canadian wilderness history through photography and writing.
