Abstract

The article focuses on Klondike gold rush of 1896-99 was the catalyst for the creation of a new Canadian territory. It mentions newcomers were Americans who believed they did not have to follow Canadian laws as gambling, boozing, and brothels flourished. It also mentions Canadian federal government was jousting with the North-West Territories over taxation authority- particularly with regards to liquor sales and Indigenous peoples were neither consulted nor included.
