Abstract
The article examines Mahatma Gandhi's evolving legacy in India and beyond since his assassination in 1948, highlighting how his ideas on non-violence, self-sufficiency, and communal harmony have been both influential and contested. While Gandhi significantly shaped India's early post-independence politics, including the creation of linguistic states and local self-governance (Panchayati Raj), his emphasis on secularism and communal harmony faces challenges amid rising nationalist sentiments. His legacy also extends to South Asia, notably influencing Nepal's democratic movements, though critiques of his views on caste, race, and social reform persist. Additionally, historians have increasingly moved beyond Gandhi-centric narratives to explore broader social histories, including marginalized groups and global Indian diasporas, reflecting a more complex understanding of India's past.
