Abstract
This article focuses on the significance and scholarly value of the Lord Stewartby Collection of Scottish coins, recently documented in the seventy-first volume of the British Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles (SCBI). The collection, assembled over seventy years by Lord Stewartby, is regarded as the most important private assemblage of Scottish coins, despite suffering thefts in 2007 and 2008 that resulted in the loss of some of its earliest and latest coins. The volume provides detailed cataloguing and analysis of coins from the reigns of James IV to James VI (1488–1625), highlighting the collection’s strengths for numismatic research and its complementarity to national museum holdings. The work also situates the collection within the broader history of Scottish numismatics, referencing key scholars and emphasizing the collection’s role in advancing modern coinage studies.
