Abstract

The main focus of this excerpt from Andre Dubus III's *The Collector* is the life of Milton "Milty" Dain, a physically imposing man grappling with the aftermath of a stroke that has left him partially paralyzed and struggling with memory loss. Once known as "Milty Pain" for his role as muscle and debt collector in his brother Asa's criminal enterprises—including gambling and pimping—Milty now faces vulnerability amid threats from those he once intimidated. The narrative explores Milty's complex relationships with his brother Asa, his ex-wife Donna, and the women working for Asa, revealing themes of loyalty, regret, and survival within a declining industrial town. As Milty attempts to regain independence and protect himself, he confronts the consequences of his violent past and the fragility of his present condition.
