Abstract

The article focuses on Wisconsin artist Charlotte Fung Miller and her development as a Chinese brush painter rooted in traditional calligraphy. Raised in San Francisco’s Chinatown, she studied Chinese calligraphy for nine years, which deeply influenced her artistic style, characterized by fluid, precise brush strokes on handmade rice paper using watercolors and Chinese ink. After moving to Wisconsin with her pediatrician husband, she balanced a career in cancer research with her evolving art practice, drawing inspiration from the natural landscapes around her. Miller’s work blends Eastern and Western techniques, and she has gained recognition through numerous awards, teaching art and Chinese cooking, while continuing to explore new artistic directions.
