Abstract

This article reviews Mark Dawidziak's book *A Mystery of Mysteries: The Death and Life of Edgar Allan Poe*, which investigates the circumstances surrounding Poe's death while reassessing his life and literary reputation. Dawidziak challenges the traditional image of Poe as a frail alcoholic, suggesting instead that he was physically robust, witty, and a complex figure who struggled with personal relationships and sought unconditional familial love. The book uniquely incorporates fresh interviews with experts such as FBI agents and forensic anthropologists to explore theories including "cooping," a form of voter fraud that may have contributed to Poe's demise, ultimately concluding that tuberculosis was the likely cause of death. While the work broadens understanding of Poe beyond his horror writing and detective fiction legacy, it offers limited analysis of his literary output and relies heavily on existing knowledge of Poe's life.
