Abstract

The article examines the evolution and widespread influence of preppy style, originally associated with affluent, white East Coast private school and Ivy League students, and its transformation into a diverse, global fashion phenomenon. It traces prep’s origins from 19th-century ready-made menswear through its popularization by retailers like Brooks Brothers and J. Press, its expansion via postwar education policies, and its reinvention by brands such as J. Crew and Abercrombie & Fitch. The style has been adopted and adapted by various racial, ethnic, gender, and cultural groups, reflecting broader social dynamics and struggles over inclusion and identity. Despite its elite roots, prep today is a fluid, democratized aesthetic that continues to evolve beyond its traditional markers, raising questions about its distinctiveness and cultural meaning.
