Abstract

This article examines the influence of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) on the development of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), focusing on the role of Major Gladstone Murray, a Canadian who worked for the BBC before becoming the CBC's first General Manager in 1936. It details the historical context of Canadian radio broadcasting, which began as a local, commercial system and only seriously considered a public service model—similar to the BBC's—after the 1928 Royal Commission on Radio Broadcasting (the Aird Report). The article highlights the efforts of the Canadian Radio League and Murray's advocacy for a public broadcasting system that balanced Canadian cultural and linguistic diversity while navigating political and commercial pressures. Although the CBC never fully replicated the BBC model due to Canada's unique geographic, cultural, and economic circumstances, Murray's leadership marked a significant turning point in integrating BBC-inspired public service broadcasting principles into Canadian radio.
