Abstract
This article examines factors influencing public trust in the Spanish monarchy and preferences between monarchy and republic, based on a 2020 survey of 9,420 Spanish residents. The study finds that trust in the monarchy is primarily explained by the perceived effectiveness of the institution, particularly the role of the current monarch, King Felipe VI, while political ideology is the second most important factor. Although preferences between monarchy and republic are nearly evenly split, with slight favor toward a republic, many respondents feel it is not the appropriate time to debate the form of government. The research highlights significant polarization in Spanish society regarding the monarchy and suggests that perceptions of institutional effectiveness outweigh ideological alignment in shaping opinions on Spain's form of government.
