Abstract
The article focuses on Argentina’s legacy of its 1976–1983 military dictatorship, marking its 50th anniversary and examining its lasting impact on the country’s democracy and human rights. The dictatorship involved widespread state terrorism, including torture, killings, and repression, but Argentina’s subsequent democratic transition led to significant prosecutions of regime leaders and the influential Nunca Más report documenting abuses. While Argentina’s democracy remains among Latin America’s strongest, political polarization and the use of human rights issues for partisan purposes have complicated the collective memory of this period. The article emphasizes the importance of continued sober reflection on this history to preserve its lessons amid ongoing regional challenges to democracy. [Extracted from the article]
