Abstract
The article focuses on the 1933 riot at Toronto’s Christie Pits, a public park and softball venue, where ethnic tensions erupted into violent clashes between Jewish youths supporting the predominantly Jewish Harbord Collegiate team and Nazi-sympathizing groups displaying swastikas. The riot, sparked during a junior softball playoff game against the Catholic St. Peter’s team, reflected broader antisemitism in Toronto fueled by local Nazi clubs and widespread social prejudice against Jewish residents. Despite police warnings, inadequate law enforcement allowed the six-hour brawl involving hundreds of participants to escalate, resulting in numerous injuries but no fatalities. The event marked a significant moment in Toronto’s history, highlighting the city’s struggles with intolerance amid its reputation for tolerance, and led to increased police presence at future games and the eventual decline of swastika clubs in the area.
