Abstract
This article examines the history and contemporary role of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers (DUP), a women’s heritage organization founded in 1901 that has become a central institution in Utah’s civil religion by preserving and commemorating pioneer history. The DUP operates numerous museums, manages extensive pioneer relic collections, and erects monuments and markers that shape Utah’s public memory and identity around the 1847 pioneer settlement. While not officially affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the DUP’s membership and activities have been influenced by Mormon culture and have helped ritualize pioneer heritage through events, publications, and place-making efforts. The organization’s unique museum display style prioritizes familial connection and unmediated access to artifacts, reflecting a broader cultural phenomenon in Utah where pioneer history functions as a form of civil religion embraced by both Mormon and non-Mormon communities.
