Abstract
This article, titled "Lefty Lewis and the Waldegraves: Collecting, Obsession, Friendship" by Stephen Clarke, explores the story of Wilmarth Sheldon Lewis, a collector, biographer, and editor of Horace Walpole, and his pursuit of the Walpoliana collection at Chewton Priory, the Waldegrave family seat in Somerset. Clarke, a Walpolian himself, is the first scholar to examine the Lewis-Waldegrave correspondence, which sheds light on Lewis's eighteen-year quest to acquire the Walpole books and manuscripts. The article also delves into the friendship between Lewis and the Waldegraves, as well as the eventual transfer of the majority of the collection to Farmington, Connecticut.
