Abstract

This article focuses on a 2021 recording of Holy Week and Easter music associated with Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, performed by the Notre-Dame Choir under organist Yves Castagnet. Originally intended to be recorded at Notre-Dame, the program was instead made at the church of Sainte-Clotilde following the 2019 fire that severely damaged Notre-Dame. The repertoire combines early sacred works by composers such as Monteverdi, Lotti, and Hassler with 20th-century pieces by Maurice Duruflé and contemporary compositions by living composers including Castagnet, Jean-Charles Gandrille, and Lise Borel. The choir features a mixed adult ensemble, a youth group, and a children’s choir, delivering a high-standard performance distinct from traditional English choral styles. This recording is part of a series exploring music for different liturgical seasons.
