Abstract
This article critically examines W.E.B. Du Bois's sociological writings on the intersections of race and gender, focusing on his theorizations of Black women's oppression in the contexts of women's suffrage and Black emancipation. While Du Bois is recognized as a foundational figure in empirically grounded sociology and early intersectional thought, the analysis reveals his limitations in fully articulating Black women's specific experiences of gendered antiblackness and political agency, often relying on heteronormative and masculinist frameworks that obscure white women's roles in sustaining racialized violence. Drawing on Black feminist scholarship that centers the afterlife of slavery and gendered antiblackness, the article argues for a critical dialogue that both builds on and pushes beyond Du Bois's insights to develop a more nuanced understanding of Black women's oppression and resistance within racialized modernity. This approach aims to enrich Du Boisian sociology by integrating Black feminist epistemologies to better address the complexities of race, gender, and antiblack violence in historical and contemporary contexts.
