Abstract
Russia has vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution that aimed to reaffirm a global commitment against deploying nuclear weapons in space. The resolution emphasized that countries should not develop nuclear weapons or any other weapons of mass destruction for placement in space, and it reiterated the obligations under the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, which prohibits nuclear weapons in orbit. Thirteen out of 15 Security Council members voted in favor of the resolution, while China abstained. The US had introduced the resolution following reports of Russia's plans to develop an anti-satellite space weapon, but Russia denied these claims. [Extracted from the article]
