Abstract
The article discusses the teaching of Mary Seacole's autobiography, "Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands," in a literature course at the University of Oxford. The text serves as an entry point for discussing nineteenth-century literature and its connections to empire, challenging students' preconceptions about literature and autobiography. The author also explores the relevance of Seacole's text during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in relation to themes of infectious diseases and the experiences of ethnic minority communities. The article emphasizes the importance of teaching Seacole's text in a decolonized curriculum, promoting a nuanced understanding of race, gender, and empire. [Extracted from the article]
