Abstract

This article provides a comprehensive historiographical overview of Cyrus the Great, the founder of the Achaemenid Persian Empire (c. 600–530 BC), focusing on classical Greek sources, archaeological findings, and modern biographies. It highlights key ancient texts by Herodotus, Xenophon, and Ctesias, which form the primary Western accounts of Cyrus's life and reign, as well as the significance of the Cyrus Cylinder—an ancient Babylonian artifact inscribed with Cyrus's decree promoting religious and cultural freedom. The article also surveys modern historical novels and scholarly works on Cyrus, noting the translation of many Western sources into Persian and emphasizing the continuing importance of archaeological research in enriching understanding of the Achaemenid period. It concludes by recognizing Cyrus's enduring legacy in both Iranian national identity and global history, while calling for further cultural productions such as film to explore his life.
