Abstract
The article offers a look into the wartime Japanese American detention camp, known as the Portland Assembly Center, in North Portland, Oregon during World War II. It describes the living conditions at the center which was viewed as more suited to housing livestock than humans and under-resourced to serve the nutritional needs of detainees. It details the surveillance and control of detainees at the center that fostered an environment hostile to constitutionally protected speech and protest.
