Abstract
This article reviews a 2018 video recording of Charles Gounod's opera *Faust*, performed at Teatro Real in Madrid and conducted by Dan Ettinger. The production, directed by Alle Olle and designed by Alfons Flores, presents a futuristic, science fiction-inspired staging that some found unconventional but not offensive. The cast features Piotr Beczala as Faust, Marina Rebeka as Marguerite, and Luca Pisaroni as Mephistopheles, with notable vocal performances and a full inclusion of Gounod’s extended score, including ballet music. While the production may not suit those preferring traditional stagings, it is praised for its imaginative approach and faithful musical interpretation of the opera’s original spirit.
