Abstract
France has voted to enshrine a woman's right to seek an abortion in its constitution, making it the first country in the world to explicitly state this in its basic law. The move was prompted by concerns over the curbing of abortion access in the US. The amendment guarantees women the freedom to have recourse to abortion under conditions stipulated by the law. The decision comes after the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, leading to restrictions and bans on abortion in some states. The French government argues that even in countries like France, where abortion rights are well-established, they can still be easily removed with a change in political control. The amendment was widely expected to pass, with 86% of respondents in a French poll supporting the guarantee of abortion rights in the constitution. The Catholic Church was the most vocal opponent of the amendment. [Extracted from the article]
